Junior Squash Update

Up and coming Wigginton Squash Club Junior, Joe Twigge, has played a key role in Yorkshire Squash Under 13s Inter Counties championship title winning team this past weekend.

Joe Twigg March 2012

Joe, currently ranked 46 in the country at U13 level, has played representative squash for Yorkshire since age 9 in lesser tournaments.  This year saw his first cap for the full Yorkshire Inter Counties side.

With Joe Playing in the key number 5 position throughout the season it was the Yorkshire sides strength in depth that saw them through to success at last weekends finals.

In reaching the finals Yorkshire had to first win through 2 qualifying rounds.

In the first round they beat Northumberland 4-1, Derbyshire 5-0 and Cheshire 5-0.  Topping this qualifying group took them onto the second round where they beat Durham and Cleveland 3-2, Warwickshire 5-0 and first round lucky losers  Northumberland  4-1.

The finals weekend saw the countries top 4 sides meet at Lilleshall National Sports Centre.

Yorkshire were first drawn up against Kent in the semi finals on Saturday.  Yorkshire proved too strong all round for their opponents running out 5-0 winners.

They then faced up to the reigning champions Hampshire in the final, who like Yorkshire had won through to the final  due to strength in depth.

With the number 5 and number 3 position players taking to the courts first it was vital they got the team off to a good start.  Both matches proved to be tough encounters.  Joe eventually ran out 3-2 winner in a tough 5th position match after going 2-1 down at one point.  The number 3 players had an equally close match with Yorkshires number 3 Nick Wall eventually winning through 3-1.  With the first two matches going to Yorkshire the match and championship was sealed to huge relief with a 3-1 win by Yorkshires number 4 player, Lewis Southward.    This left the Number 1 and number 2 seeds to play out dead rubbers.  Yorkshire eventually winding up 4-1 championship winners in a match that was far closer than the score gives on.

Throughout the season Joe has not lost one of his county matches, dropping only 3 games in total, two of those being in the final.

Joe is coached at Wigginton by Neil Cordell and receives funding from Active York.
